Art Gianfermo Receives Sunnyvale Community Volunteer of the Year Award

On July 4th 2010 at the Sunnyvale State of the City event in Washington Park, Art Gianfermo received the Community Volunteer of the Year award.

Art was recognized for being the “heart and soul” of Charles Street Gardens, Sunnyvale’s community garden, for his tireless efforts. He volunteers as many as up to 20 hours a week focusing on the Food Forest activities. The goal of Art’s Food Forest permaculture project is to provide fresh produce to families in need via a partnership with Sunnyvale Cares. Art always welcomes new volunteers who wish to help grow food for the hungry and learn more about gardening.

Spring Plant Sale & Open House – April 17

Charles Street Gardens’ Spring Plant Sale and Open House is on Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Come by and get seedlings for your summer garden and tour Sunnyvale’s only community garden.

We will have a variety of spring and summer vegetable seedlings (tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, etc.) for sale as well as herbs and perennials such as strawberries and raspberries.

There will also be a FREE gardening class on “Planting Your Summer Garden” taught by the Master Gardeners at 10:30am and 1:00pm.

Fall Plant Sale – October 3

Charles Street Gardens’ Fall Plant Sale is on Saturday, October 3, 2009, from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Come by and get seedlings for your fall/winter garden. Yes, you can grow veggies all winter in the bay area!

We will have winter greens, broccoli, cabbage, perennial herbs, and lots of strawberries. Fall is the best time to plant perennials like strawberries.

Charles Street Gardens opened its gates to Sunnyvale on May 29, 2006 and we have been growing ever since thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers. Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate this weekend. It was great to celebrate with our founding members and the many new faces who have joined over the years.

Here’s to many more years of growing!

Earth Day weekend was a great success!

Our 3rd annual Spring Plant Sale fundraiser was a success. We sold a ton of vegetable, herb, and flower seedlings; and gave tours of the gardens in between the 2 transplanting classes that the Master Gardeners taught. We saw old friends and supporters as well as new faces that will hopefully visit the garden again. Thanks to all who helped organize and volunteered during the sale.

On Sunday a few of us set up an info booth at the Full Circle Farm Earth Day festival and sold more plants and t-shirts while telling people about our wonderful community garden. The weather was warm, but so were all the smiles and laughter. There was great music, workshops, and people. Thanks again to those who helped out at the farm.

A fantastic weekend all around!

If you are interested in volunteering at our Earth Day Plant Sale on April 18 please email Jenny. We are looking for people to set up, assist with purchases, and clean up, as well as pass out fliers at the Farmer’s Market.

Even if you don’t have time to volunteer, feel free to stop by and buy some plants for your garden.

Earth Day Plant Sale – April 18

Our 3rd annual Earth Day Plant Sale is coming up.

We will be offering a variety of vegetable, herb, and perennial flower seedlings for a suggested tax-deductible donation (all proceeds benefit our volunteer-run community garden). All plants are organically raised right here at Charles Street Gardens. We will also be offering tours of the gardens and a free class on transplanting from the Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County.
